CPI & Core CPI

Intermediate 6 minLesson 1 of 12

Learning objectives

  • Explain cpi & core cpi in plain language
  • Understand why it matters to markets
  • Recognise a common misconception

The concept

Definition: the Consumer Price Index measures changes in prices of a basket of consumer goods. Core excludes food and energy. Published monthly by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

Why it matters

It is the most watched U.S. measure.

How markets interpret it

Traders compare the actual figure with the consensus forecast. A higher-than-expected print can lift yields and the dollar. Market reactions are never guaranteed: they depend on expectations, positioning, and other news.

How it may relate to gold

Gold traders watch CPI because it shifts rate expectations and real yields.

Key takeaways

  • CPI: BLS, monthly.
  • Surprise vs forecast drives reactions.
